The region and how to get here

The name Zagori is of Slavic origin and means "the place behind the mountains". The region extends in 1.000 square km and is divided in three subareas: The eastern Zagori area, the western Zagori area and the central Zagori area. Zagori includes 47 traditional villages. The visitors enthused by the wild beauty of landscape.

The flora of the region is the most varied in Greece. The area is full of pines, firs, beeches, bushes, rare flowers and herbs. The amateur naturalist Kostas Lazaridis collected 1240 different species of plants. In the village of Koukouli you may find the museum of Zagori flora.

The fauna of the region includes the wild goat, the wild boar, the bear, the wolves and the wild cats. Also there are 130 species of birds and 21 species of reptiles.

The villages have historical and cultural heritage from ancient times. There are remains of ancient villages and settlements that is beleived that belong to ancient tribe of Pelasgi. Due to the wild formation of the ground, the climate conditions and the forests, the residents constructed bridges in order to connect the villages, using the only material of the area, the stone.

Thus, people in the villages began building stone-bridges that preserved in excellent condition for centuries. Also the residents constructed stone-made footpaths, buildings, churches, stone built manor houses and other monuments.

One of the most picturesque villages of Zagori is the village of Skamneli. Skamneli is built at a distance of 50 km from Ioannina, the capital city of Epirus. Skamneli is a traditional village that is built in Tumfi Mountain in an altitude of 1160 m. The access to the village is easy from the city of Ioannina, with regular bus services of the intercity Bus Company of Ioannina (KTEL). You may arrive to the village as well using your car.

Visit the village square, the church of St. Apostols (1793), the church of St. Nikolaos in the entrance of village and the church of St. Paraskevi at the end of the village. Skamneli is renowned for its 11 old churches scattered in the village.

Come and walk in the stone-made footpaths, see the old plane tree and the taps, the stone-paved village square, as well as the old stone-built mansions (Theodosiou, Gennadiou, Fragouli and Kiparisou). The Zagori is endless!
